Mac Stalls on Gray Screen at Startup - Fix using Single User mode

During bootup you may encounter the spinning gear under the Apple Logo spinning endlessly. One method to easily fix this problem is by doing the following steps.

A) Boot into SINGLE-USER MODE.

  • 1. Shut down your Mac if it is on.
  • 2. Press the power button to start the computer.
  • 3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key

B) RUN FSCK (File System Check) on your startup volume

The Mac will display text across the screen and a prompt near the bottom.

Type the following at the command line once your computer finishes the booting sequence:

/sbin/fsck -y

Once completed power off and power on your computer.

C)  ZAP the PRAM

  • 1. Shut down your Mac if it is on.
  • 2. Press the power button to start the computer.
  • 3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "p" and "r" keys
  • 4. Continue to hold down the four keys. This is a long process, during which your Mac will restart on its own.
  • 5. Finally, when you hear the second startup chime, you can release the keys.
  • 6. Your Mac will finish the startup process.
